Weekly Reflection

Last week we celebrated Father's Day at both campuses and gave thanks for the fathers, grandfathers, stepfathers, carers, mentors and father figures who nurture, guide and encourage us.

Their presence in our lives reminds us of God's faithful love, expressed through acts of sacrifice, wisdom, patience and care.

Father's Day falls close to the Feast of St Francis of Assisi, a saint whose life offers an inspiring example of what it means to live with humility, compassion and gratitude. Although Francis was not a father in the traditional sense, he became a spiritual father to many through his gentle leadership and his commitment to seeing the dignity of every person and all of creation.

St Francis recognised that true strength is found not in power or status, but in serving others with love.

Many fathers and father figures embody this same spirit each day through the often unseen acts of generosity that support their families and communities. Whether offering guidance during difficult times, celebrating achievements, or simply being present when needed most, they model the self-giving love that lies at the heart of the Gospel.

As a school community, we pause to thank those who have helped shape our lives through their care and encouragement. We also remember those for whom Father's Day can be difficult, including those who have lost their fathers or whose family circumstances bring challenges. May they find comfort in God's love and in the support of our community.

May God bless all fathers and father figures with joy, strength and peace.

From the Principal

Remembering Sr Helen Reed

We were saddened this past week to hear of the passing of our founding principal Sr Helen Reed.

Sr Helen holds a special place in our school's history. During her years as principal of CRC Melton (1980-1984), she led with wisdom, compassion and a deep commitment to the wellbeing of students and staff.

Before joining CRC, Sr Helen had worked at Aquinas College in Ringwood and extensively across Victorian country parish schools.

She was the principal of MacKillop College in Werribee when the Provincial of the Sisters of the Order of St Joseph invited her to apply for the principalship at the new Catholic Regional College campus in Melton. In the great Josephite tradition of ‘never seeing a need without doing something about it’, Sr Helen agreed.

Her vision and philosophy were best summed up in a prospectus she produced, which revealed much about the school's character in its early years.

“In this Catholic school, we would aim through our education and our teaching of the Catholic faith to create a Christian Educational Community… Where human knowledge, enlightened and enlivened by faith, is shared by teachers, students and parents in a spirit of freedom and love.”

The story of CRC Melton's early years reflects the determination and “can-do” attitude of Sr Helen and her staff; it was a small school with limited enrolment and funding that had to make the best of its resources.

Staff and student recollections from this time reflect a great spirit of community and pride in building something up from nothing.

Sr Helen’s strong leadership, caring nature and unwavering dedication helped shape the culture and foundations of the College that continue to influence our community today.

After leaving our College, Sr Helen spent 12 months studying overseas before being appointed principal at Mount St Joseph Girls’ College in Altona, where she remained until her retirement in 2002.

We offer our heartfelt condolences to Sr Helen's family, the Sisters of Saint Joseph, and all who knew and loved her.

For the many past and present staff and students whose lives Sr Helen touched, we encourage you to take a moment to remember and celebrate her remarkable life, dedicated service, and enduring legacy.

In her final message to the CRC Melton community, Sr Helen said:

“As I farewell you all, I pray that you may embrace the challenge of the future in a spirit of co-responsibility, mindful of our motto, In all things let God be glorified.”

Early Dismissal and Bus Arrangements - Melton Campus

Please note that although students will be dismissed at 1.50pm on Thursday 10 September, buses cannot pick up students earlier than usual.

If your child has no alternative transport home, they can remain at school and will be supervised by staff until their bus arrives at the regular scheduled time.

Food Deliveries During the School Day

At St Francis Catholic College, our priority is to provide a safe, healthy and focused learning environment where students can fully engage in their education with minimal disruption.

To support this, we ask for your continued partnership in maintaining consistent routines throughout the school day.

Recently, the College has experienced an increase in food deliveries from external vendors (including Uber Eats and other takeaway services) being arranged for students during school hours. While we understand there may occasionally be exceptional circumstances, these deliveries can:

disrupt student learning, as students need to leave class to collect orders
place additional demands on our Reception staff, whose primary focus is supporting students, families, visitors and essential school operations
present health and wellbeing concerns, as the College cannot verify or accept responsibility for externally prepared food, including allergens, food safety or delivery conditions
impact the operation of the College canteen, which provides an approved food service for students each day.

We therefore ask parents, guardians and students not to arrange commercial food deliveries to the College during school hours.

If your child forgets their lunch, you are welcome to drop off a packed lunch at Reception. In exceptional circumstances, please contact the College so we can discuss appropriate arrangements.

We appreciate your understanding and support in working with us to maintain an orderly, safe and positive learning environment for all students while allowing our Reception staff to focus on providing essential support to our school community.

Students Unite for Write a Book in a Day

Our flagship event for Book Week each year is the annual Write a Book in a Day competition - a unique opportunity for collaboration and creativity, bringing together more than 80 students at both campuses.

Working in teams, students developed stories from start to finish in just 12 hours last Wednesday, demonstrating teamwork and imagination under real-time pressure. The resulting books reflected the students' commitment, resilience and their ability to bring ideas to life against the clock.

The library was abuzz with creative energy throughout the day, with excitement and just a touch of panic setting in as the deadline loomed.

By 8pm, all SFCC teams had completed the task successfully, once again helping raise funds for childhood cancer research.

Here is what Year 10 Melton student Rachel thought about the event:

“Taking part in Write a Book in a Day 2026 was such an amazing and memorable experience. This was my first time participating, so I wasn’t completely sure what to expect going into the day, but I ended up really enjoying it.

"My favourite part was creating the characters and seeing all the different ideas everyone brought to the story. I especially enjoyed working together as a team and watching our ideas evolve into something we could all be proud of.

"It was really exciting to see how much we could accomplish in just one day, and even though it was a long day, it was completely worth it. I’m really glad I decided to take part, and this may be my first Write a Book in a Day, but there will definitely be many more to come!”

You can read the students' completed stories below and make a donation to the teams up until 30 September. Each team must raise a minimum of $240 in sponsorship to be eligible for competition prizes, with all funds going to childhood cancer research.

Book Week 2026 in the Library

It’s been a very busy few weeks in the library, with Book Week bringing plenty of creativity, fun and, of course, a focus on books!

Students enjoyed a range of activities throughout the week, including word searches and colouring, Blind Date with a Book, and making magnetic bookmarks.

Our Blind Date with a Book proved particularly popular, with students choosing a mystery book based on its description rather than its cover.

The magnetic bookmark-making was also a big hit, with some fantastic and thoughtful designs.

Students also took part in our Bookmark Design Competition and the challenge to turn their favourite book into an album cover. Congratulations to Krisha Devi, who won both competitions with her creative designs!

The library was also buzzing with excitement for Write a Book in a Day (WABIAD). Students worked together to write, illustrate, and produce a book in just 12 hours. The challenge created a huge buzz throughout the library. You can read all the new books our students wrote here.

A big thank you to everyone who joined in and helped make the past few weeks such a success. And remember, there’s always something happening in the library!

SACCSS Athletics Championships

Congratulations to all students from Melton and Cobblebank who competed in the SACCSS Athletics Championships on Monday 31 August.

We had some outstanding results on the day including the following overall champions:

SACCSS Junior Badminton

Congratulations to Year 7 Cobblebank students Jiya and Ridhi, who brought home medals from the recent SACCSS Junior Badminton tournament.

The Girls Doubles B Pair defeated CRC St Albans 27-22 in a fantastic display of teamwork and skill in their grand final match.

Well done also to Year 8 Cobblebank student Ethan and Year 7 student who were the Boys Doubles A Pair runners-up on the day.

Students from both campuses competed in the tournament and played well against some high-level competition.

Three out of four girls' pairs from Cobblebank Campus and one Melton Campus mixed pair with Emmanuel College made it through to the semi-finals.

Pouches Sewn with Love for Wildlife

Our Year 8 Textiles students at both campuses participated in a special joey pouch incursion, putting their sewing skills into action to support Australian wildlife in need.

After learning about threatened and endangered Australian species, students used their new sewing skills to design and construct joey pouches for injured and orphaned wildlife.

Half of the pouches were donated directly on the day, while the remaining pouches will be sent to Animal Rescue Cooperative in New South Wales, which will distribute them to smaller animal rescue organisations on our behalf.

This semester alone, students across our Cobblebank and Melton campuses have made nearly 300 joey pouches.

Combined with the hundreds of pouches students have created over previous semesters and the past few years, their collective contribution has become a significant and ongoing source of support for wildlife rescue organisations.

What began as a textiles project has become an opportunity for students to develop practical skills while making a genuine difference in their community.

Through their creativity, perseverance and willingness to help, our students are demonstrating that the skills they learn in the classroom can have a meaningful impact far beyond it.

Arts and Technology Domain Leader - Cobblebank Campus

Year 9 Drama - Cobblebank Campus

Year 9 Drama students have been exploring the theatrical style of Commedia dell'arte through practical performance and creative design.

As part of their learning, students researched and created half masks to represent the traditional stock characters, including Arlecchino, Pantalone, Il Capitano, Brighella, Il Dottore and Tartaglia.

Using cardboard, paper mâché and paint, they carefully shaped and enhanced the facial features of their masks to capture each character’s unique personality and status.

Students then developed their understanding of the exaggerated movements, physicality and vocal techniques associated with these iconic characters.

Working collaboratively in groups, they created and performed scenes that showcased their knowledge of Commedia dell'arte, demonstrating growth in their acting skills, characterisation and ensemble performance.

Last week, we celebrated Health and PE Week with the motto: “Get Healthy, Be Active, Be You!”

We kicked off the week with our annual Staff vs Year 12 Students mixed netball game, with the teachers claiming victory!

The smoothie bike was once again a great success, giving students the opportunity to blend and enjoy their own fruit drinks.

We finished the week with Sports Scarf Day and our Longest Kick Competition. Congratulations to the winners Year 10 student Hendrix and Year 9 student Summer.

We had a fantastic week celebrating HPE Week at Cobblebank Campus. Students and staff took part in a range of activities, competitions, and challenges throughout the week, including the Staff vs Students Volleyball Match, 3-Point Shootout, Penalty Shootout, Smoothie Bike, AFL Longest Kick, and Vertical Jump Competition.

The students put up a great fight and defeated the teachers in two out of three matches. There was a great turnout for the sports competitions, with plenty of prize winners. Congratulations to all students who participated and competed throughout the week.

We finished off with Sports Scarf Day, giving students and staff the chance to show their sporting spirit.

It was great to see so many students getting active, supporting each other and enjoying some friendly competition/activities throughout the week.

Second Successful Maker's Market for 2026

Thank you to all students and staff who supported our VCE VM Maker's Market at Melton Campus last Friday.

The event was a huge success, and we hope all the gifts went to appreciative homes.

Well done to our VCE VM students - the merchandising looked fantastic, and the customer service ensured sales were smooth and swift on the day.

Year 12 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Recognition Dinner

Year 12 student Ryan was among the students recognised at the recent Year 12 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Recognition Dinner, hosted by the Victorian Catholic Education Authority (VCEA).

Families, friends, and supporters from across the dioceses in Melbourne came together to acknowledge the efforts of this year’s graduates and celebrate their success.

Ryan was joined by his family, mum Christine, and sister Alannah, who is also a tutor for the Indigenous program at SFCC.

Ryan and the other graduates were presented with a special Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander stole and a pin featuring Bunjil the Eagle, the spiritual protector of the Kulin Nation in Victoria.

These were presented alongside a graduation certificate highlighting student’s

ongoing connection to Country as they step into the next stage of their journey.

The evening concluded with a prayer of blessing and commissioning led by VCEA officials.

During the prayer, each parent/guardian placed a hand on their child’s shoulder as a meaningful sign of blessing, encouragement, and support for our graduates.

Melton Inter-House Girls Basketball Tournament

The Anthony House girls basketball team won last week's Inter-House Basketball Competition grandfinal against Dominic to take out the title for 2026!

The competition kicked off last Wednesday with incredible participation from all Houses.

Two particularly nail-biting matches were held between Anthony and MacKillop (8-6) and Glowrey and Lawrence (8-6).

Catherine claimed a decisive victory over Bakhita despite a valiant effort (22-11), while Dominic also won convincingly over Bernard (18-1).

Anthony and Dominic blitzed their way through the semi-finals before Anthony won 10-5 in the final match, much to the delight of a very enthusiastic crowd.

We are excited to invite our St Francis Catholic College community to the upcoming VET Dance Showcase, to be held on Thursday 17 September from 6pm in the Performing Arts Centre at Melton Campus.

This showcase is a wonderful opportunity for our VET Dance students to share their talents with our school community. It will celebrate the skills, hard work, commitment, and passion our students have demonstrated throughout the year.

Best of all, this is a free event, and no tickets are required!

Complaints Handling Update

Melbourne Archdiocese Catholic Schools (MACS) has recently updated its Complaints Handling Framework to strengthen the way schools respond to concerns and complaints. The revised framework promotes consistency, procedural fairness, and timely, respectful communication, helping schools work collaboratively with families and students to resolve issues effectively.

The updated framework includes a revised Complaints Handling Policy for MACS Schools and Complaints Handling Procedures, which provide clear guidance on how MACS schools manage concerns and complaints.

What this means for our community

At our College, we value positive and respectful relationships with students, parents, guardians and the wider school community. The updated framework supports our commitment to:

listening to concerns and complaints respectfully and taking them seriously

Melbourne Victory Holiday Program

The Melbourne Victory Holiday Program, funded by the Victorian Government’s Department of Education, is back on during the upcoming Spring school holidays.

The free programs focus on developing leadership, teamwork and football skills while promoting social and emotional wellbeing.

The program aims to engage young people from multicultural backgrounds and anyone who faces barriers to accessing quality football programs, creating an inclusive environment for young people from schools and community services.
