Responding with compassion: a reflection on the Nepal disaster

The recent disaster in Nepal has brought heartbreaking images of loss, destruction, and uncertainty. Thousands of families have been affected by devastating floods that have swept through communities, destroying homes, livelihoods, and critical infrastructure.

As a Catholic school community, we are reminded that our faith calls us to respond to suffering with compassion, prayer, and action.

In the Gospel of Matthew, Jesus tells us,"Whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me" (Matthew 25:40).

These words invite us to see Christ in those who are hurting and to ask how we can be a source of hope.

Our first response can be prayer. We pray for those who have lost loved ones, for families displaced from their homes, and for the emergency workers and volunteers assisting those in need. Prayer unites us with our brothers and sisters across the world and reminds us that no one suffers alone.

The Nepal disaster highlights how vulnerable many communities are to natural hazards and the growing challenges posed by a changing climate.

By educating ourselves and reflecting on our responsibility as stewards of God's creation, we can work towards a more just and sustainable world.

In times of tragedy, it is easy to feel powerless. Yet small acts of kindness, united with prayer and faith, can make a meaningful difference.

May we be inspired to open our hearts, support those in need, and live out the Gospel message of love, compassion, and solidarity.

New cricket nets strengthen our Cricket Academy

We are excited to announce that construction of cricket nets at Cobblebank Campus is now complete. They are a fantastic addition to our sporting facilities and an exciting investment in our students' development.

The new nets have been made possible by a substantial contribution from Cricket Australia, supporting our commitment to providing high-quality opportunities for students to develop their athletic skills and pursue their passion for cricket.

The facility will be an important resource for our Cricket Academy, providing students with a dedicated space to train, practice and refine their skills in a structured and supportive environment. It will also benefit our broader College community, supporting cricket programs and encouraging more students to participate in the sport.

We are proud to continue investing in facilities that create opportunities for our students to discover their strengths, develop their talents and strive for excellence.

A big thank you to Cricket Australia for their contribution to this exciting project. We look forward to seeing plenty of cricket played and plenty of future runs scored!

Write a Book in a Day

Our annual Write a Book in a Day event continues to gather momentum, with more than 100 students across both campuses ready to write, edit, illustrate, and publish a complete book in just 12 hours tomorrow!

These books will be shared via a national digital library with children undergoing medical treatment in hospitals across Australia.

Each team must raise a minimum of $240 in sponsorship to be eligible for competition prizes, with all funds going to childhood cancer research.

In past years, our students have been incredibly successful in their fundraising efforts, contributing thousands of dollars to this important cause. We’re hoping to match (or surpass!) those totals this year. You can make a donation using the links below - fundraising will remain open until 30 September.

In 2024 and 2025, teams from St Francis won Victorian and National prizes for illustrations, and we're hoping to build on this success in 2026 (we might even score a writing prize this time).

Thank you for supporting our students as they take on this creative and worthwhile challenge once again.

Sunny Skies for Ski Trip

Last week's senior ski trip provided students with three days of adventure, learning and unforgettable memories in the snow.

After arriving at Mt Buller on Wednesday, students wasted no time hitting the slopes, enjoying an afternoon of skiing as they settled into their alpine surroundings. The day continued with a twilight skiing session, giving everyone the unique experience of skiing under lights.

Throughout the trip, students participated in ski lessons where they developed new abilities, refined their technique and, most importantly, learned to embrace challenges.

Whether they were mastering their first turns, tackling steeper runs or building the confidence to get back up after a fall, every student achieved progress at their own pace.

Beyond the slopes, the trip provided a valuable opportunity to form new friendships and strengthen existing connections. Students encouraged one another, celebrated successes and shared experiences that will be remembered for years to come.

One of the most rewarding aspects of the trip was witnessing the personal growth of our students. Skiing demands self-confidence, resilience, patience and perseverance. They quickly discovered that improvement doesn't always happen immediately and that sometimes the best approach is to take a breath, try again, and trust the process. These qualities extend far beyond the mountain and will serve them well in many areas of life.

A huge thank you to all students for their positive attitude, willingness to step outside their comfort zones and the way they represented our College throughout the trip. We are incredibly proud of how they challenged themselves, supported their peers and embraced every opportunity.

The 2026 Senior Ski Trip was certainly one to remember, filled with skiing, laughter, friendship, challenge and personal growth. It created lasting memories that students will carry with them as they move towards the final stages of their secondary schooling.

Students Set to Shine at 4Cs Showcase

In less than two weeks, our students will hit the stage at this year's 4Cs Showcase.

Ten of our cultural dance groups are preparing for the event. You can read more about each of them below.

The 4Cs Showcase is a performance program for secondary students in years 7 to 12 that centres around Cultivating Creative Cultures with Communities. The aim is to celebrate the different cultures in our local community and support VCE VM student outcomes.

We thank our students for their commitment, willingness to share their culture through dance and for proudly representing the College at this special event.
