Weekly Reflection

Remembering Venerable Dr Sr Mary Glowrey

On 5 May 1957, Dr Sister Mary Glowrey passed away, having become a powerful witness to what it means to live out the Gospel in action.

Born in Birregurra, Victoria, in 1887, she devoted her life to serving the poor and vulnerable in India as a doctor, religious sister and missionary.

Educated at Melbourne University, Mary Glowrey saw her medical work not simply as a profession, but as a vocation. Guided by her faith, she recognised Christ in every person she cared for, especially those most in need. Her life reflects the words of Jesus in the Gospel: “Whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me”.

For us, as a Catholic school community, her example invites us to consider how we live our faith each day.

We may not be called to travel across the world, but we are all called to serve with love, compassion, and humility in our own surroundings.

Mary Glowrey also reminds us of the importance of prayer and trust in God. Despite the many challenges she faced, she remained faithful and committed, drawing strength from her relationship with God. Her courage encourages us to rely on our faith, especially in times of difficulty.

As we reflect on her life this week, may we be inspired to follow Christ more closely and use our gifts in the service of others. In doing so, we continue the mission of the Church: to bring hope, healing, and love to the world.

From the Principal

The College School Advisory Council (SAC) has been successfully operating for several years now under the guidance of our Chair, Michael Gruis. As Principal, I highly value the support and guidance of this group of interested parents.

With recent student graduations and to ensure continual renewal of membership, the SAC is seeking Expressions of Interest from parents who would like to join the Council.

Meetings occur twice per term and are in person in Terms 1 and 4 and online in Terms 2 and 3. Meetings generally last 60–90 minutes.

You can find details of the role of the SAC below.

Anyone interested in joining can send an Expression of Interest to principal@sfcc.vic.edu.au.

Successful candidates will be required to:

  • sign the school’s Child Safety Code of Conduct
  • undertake a Working with Children Check as per the Worker Screening Act 2020 (Vic.)
  • accept the MACS Code of Conduct for School Advisory Council members.

MACS Working Together in Mission Charter for Schools

Advisory in nature

SACs are advisory bodies that serve as an important expression of the educational partnership among parents, schools, parishes, and the wider community to support all students.

This partnership is reflected in the ex-officio membership of both the principal and the parish priest on the council. What the council does is directed by MACS through the Terms of Reference for School Advisory Councils.

The SAC is a forum for discussion and discernment, where parents and community perspectives are available to influence and support the decisions of the principal and parish priest for the good of the school and parish, with students’ wellbeing and outcomes paramount.

School Advisory Councils are:

  • part of the broader governance framework of MACS
  • a consultative, review and advisory body
  • found in all MACS schools, both primary and secondary levels
  • guided in their actions by the MACS Statement of Mission, and an understanding of the history of the parish, founders and school
  • a forum for parents to share their wisdom with, and offer support to, the principal and the strategic interests of the school
  • a sounding board for all stakeholders that provides feedback to the principal and parish priest
  • an important point of liaison with parish pastoral councils
  • avenues for parents to contribute to their children’s school and build up one another
  • designed to fit the pastoral model of each particular parish or association of parishes
  • a form of Church lay ministry
  • a means of engagement with parents that enables a fruitful participation in consultation on matters affecting the education of students.

They:

  • are not the governing body of a school
  • do not have a decision-making authority
  • do not have a legal identity
  • do not become involved in the day-to-day management of the school
  • are not a forum for parent advocacy or special interest representation
  • are not a parents and friends association
  • are not a fundraising forum or fete-organising committee.

Enhancing the relationship between the parish and the school

The relationship between the parish and the school in the provision of Catholic education is crucial to students' faith development and learning outcomes, the enlivening of parish life, and the development of community.

It is important that schools and councils:

  • recognise, develop and maintain fruitful relationships within the parish
  • recognise the role of the school in the overall mission of the parish
  • recognise the contribution of the parish to the school
  • support the relationship between school and parish
  • play an active role in the life of the parish.

The Working Together in Mission charter acknowledges that the SAC plays a role in supporting the relationship between the parish priest and principalas a means of building the parish and school community.

Investment of time and resources in life-giving relationships between the parish priest, principal and families breathes life into the Catholic school community.

Processes and strategies to further cultivate an environment of support and encouragement through the induction and formation of SAC members will be developed by the Catholic Archdiocese of Melbourne and MACS through the combined efforts of the Episcopal Vicar for Catholic Schools and the School Advisory Councils Secretariat.

2027 Subject Selection

This week, we spoke with our Year 11 Melton Campus students about transitioning into Year 12.

It is an important time for students to carefully consider whether they are in the right program and the right subjects as they get closer to Year 12 and make decisions to finalise their programs for next year.

You will find the presentation and planning sheet shared with students here.

All students must complete the form. If they need assistance or support they can speak with their subject teachers, learning leaders and the Careers Team. The names of these staff are listed in the presentation.

Subject pre-selection survey

Students in Years 9-11 this year will receive a subject pre-selection survey this week to complete, to help us plan for next year.

Official subject selection will begin after our Subject Expo on Wednesday 24 June. The portal will open from Thursday 25 June until Friday 24 July.

Maker's Market at Melton Campus

The VCE VM Makers Market has become quite an event on the College calendar.

All items are handmade by the students and include candles, mugs, serving platters, beaded keyrings, combs, mirrors, pens, magnets, plants and much more.

This year, for the first time, students will showcase items made on the new 3D printer, including trinket dishes, trolley tokens and fidget pens.

The market is also a great opportunity for students to pick up a last-minute Mother's Day gift.

Cash and card will be accepted on the day, and prices range from $2 to $15.

Ensemble Camp

This year’s Ensemble Camp brought students from both campuses together for three days of music, collaboration and a lot of fun.

It was our biggest camp yet, with students working hard to learn and rehearse new repertoire across a range of ensembles.

The cross-campus experience gave everyone the chance to meet new people, build confidence and strengthen their skills, all while sharing a love of music.

Alongside our Vocal Ensemble, Concert Band and Guitar Ensemble, we were excited to introduce two new groups: the Developmental Concert Band and the Percussion Ensemble. It was fantastic to see the growth across all groups in such a short time, and we look forward to showcasing it.

Thank you to all teachers and instrumental music staff who made this camp possible.

Catherine House Mass

Last Wednesday, Catherine House celebrated Mass for the feast day of St Catherine of Siena, which falls on 29 April each year.

Father Wilford’s homily reflected on her life and work and the importance of staying courageous during difficult times.

It was a great opportunity for Catherine House staff and students from both campuses to gather and remember such an inspirational saint.

Year 9 Food Studies: Recipe of the Week

This week we’re sharing an easy and delicious risotto recipe that brings native spices into a contemporary recipe.

Our Year 9 students made it in class last week, and it was a real crowd‑pleaser. They thoroughly enjoyed learning the new skill of making a risotto and exploring the aromatics of bush tomato and sweet paprika.

You can click below for the full recipe. Please take note of the serving size.
