The theme of Refugee Week 2026, A Million Stories, celebrates a significant milestone: Australia has now issued one million humanitarian visas since the end of World War II.
Since 1947, when Australia agreed to welcome 4000 refugees from Central Europe, the nation has provided safety and a new future for people from around the world. Refugee Week is an opportunity to recognise and celebrate the diverse experiences, contributions, and resilience of these individuals, whose stories have helped shape modern Australia.
During Refugee Week, we are encouraged to reflect on the experiences of millions of people around the world who have been forced to leave their homes because of war, persecution, violence, or natural disasters. Refugees often face uncertainty, loss, and hardship as they seek safety and a chance to rebuild their lives.
As a Franciscan school community, we are called to live out the Gospel values of compassion, justice, and hospitality during Refugee Week. These values were central to the life of St Francis of Assisi. St Francis recognised the dignity of every person and welcomed those who were poor, vulnerable, and excluded from society. He saw all people as brothers and sisters, united by God's love.
The example of St Francis challenges us to look beyond differences and respond with kindness and understanding to those seeking refuge and safety.
By following the example of St Francis, we can help build a world where compassion overcomes fear and hope triumphs over hardship.

It is with great joy that we celebrated the official opening and blessing of the San Damiano Building last Friday.
This building is Stage 2 of the Cobblebank Masterplan and was funded by generous support from the Australian Government Capital Grants Program and the Catholic Development Fund.
The opening marks a significant milestone in the history of our College.
As our community continues to grow, so too does our commitment to providing exceptional learning environments that nurture the talents, aspirations and potential of every young person entrusted to our care.
This beautiful new building represents far more than bricks and mortar. It reflects our belief in the development of the whole person. While academic excellence remains central to our mission, we are equally committed to fostering the artistic, creative, technological and practical skills that enable students to flourish in a rapidly changing world.
As educators in the Catholic tradition, we understand that creativity is a gift from God. Throughout history, art has played a vital role in expressing faith, telling stories and inspiring communities. Great works of sacred art have helped generations encounter the divine and reflect on the beauty of creation.
In the same spirit, the learning that will take place within these walls will be about much more than developing technical skills. It will be about nurturing imagination, encouraging innovation, fostering collaboration and empowering students to express their unique gifts and perspectives.
At St Francis Catholic College, we believe that education should form the mind, body and spirit. Creative and artistic pursuits teach patience, perseverance, attention to detail and resilience. They encourage students to think critically, solve problems creatively and communicate with confidence. These are qualities that will serve them not only in their future careers but throughout their lives.
Buildings such as this do not happen by accident.
The San Damiano Building is the result of significant vision, planning, coordination and collaboration over many years. Many people have contributed to bringing this project from concept to reality.
I would particularly like to acknowledge those staff members who have played a key role in this journey.
I would like to offer special recognition to Kerrie-Ann Matthews, our Deputy Principal Head of Cobblebank Campus, who, from the very beginning, worked tirelessly to progress this project. Starting with the initial grant application, Kerrie-Ann coordinated numerous stakeholders and brought together staff with specialist expertise to work alongside our architects and consultants.
Her dedication, persistence and leadership have helped create the outstanding facility we have today.

Once again, St Francis Catholic College is proud to participate in Australia’s Best Teachers campaign.

This will affect travel to and from Cobblebank Campus, so please allow extra time to reach the College both before and after school.

Current Year 9, 10 and 11 students and families from both campuses are reminded to attend next week's 2027 Subject Selection Expo and year-level presentations.
The evening will help students make informed choices regarding subject selection and pathways that best suit their interests, strengths, and career aspirations, giving them the greatest chance of success.
It is expected that all current Year 9, 10 and 11 students from both campuses attend the expo and information sessions with a parent/guardian at the Melton Campus as follows.
4pm – 8pm, Sheehan Stadium and the Performing Arts Centre (PAC) at Melton Campus. Please bring appropriate warm clothing as the stadium is not heated.

We are expecting a large number of visitors, and parking around the Melton campus is limited. We ask that you be mindful of our neighbours and any parking restrictions that may apply. Upon arrival at the Expo, families are asked to register their attendance through the QR codes available in the stadium or the PAC.

information sessions, or need further assistance, please notify your child’s mentor teacher before the
event.


All parents and guardians of students in Year 7, 8 and 9 at our Melton Campus are invited to attend an information evening about the Athlete Development Program and Elite Sports Academy this Wednesday 17 June at 6pm in the Performing Arts Centre.
This presentation relates to the subjects in Year 9 and 10, and applications will open soon after the session.
Year 7 and 8 students and parents are also strongly encouraged to attend this information session, as it will provide valuable insight into the expectations, selection criteria, and key qualities we are seeking in students within these year levels prior to the application process in Year 9 and/or 10.
It is a great opportunity to ask any questions you may have about the subject and learn more about the excellent opportunities within the Elite Sports Academy for our talented student-athletes.

Set to the soundtrack of ABBA’s greatest hits, this much-loved musical promises an evening of laughter, energy, and entertainment. Our students and staff have been working incredibly hard behind the scenes, and we can’t wait to share the results with our school community.
Join us from 23–25 July as our talented cast transports audiences to a sun-soaked Greek island, brought to life through unforgettable songs, vibrant performances, and the timeless music of ABBA.

Year 9 Textiles students have been designing and creating unique wearable art pieces using recycled materials this term.
As part of the design process, students investigated and experimented with a range of materials, including paper, plastic bottles, milk jugs, pipe cleaners, cardboard and even yoga mats!
Students were exploring creative ways to manipulate these items into innovative costume designs, stepping away from the machines and toward a greater focus on design rather than sewing.
Students selected celebrities or fictional characters as their clients, using these inspirations to guide their design concepts and final creations. Through this project, students developed their creativity, problem-solving skills, and understanding of sustainable design practices.
The completed wearable art pieces will be proudly displayed in glass cabinets in Cobblebank's new San Damiano Building, where they will be preserved and eventually showcased as part of an end-of-year art exhibition.

What happens when students are given the freedom to pursue what genuinely interests them?
This year, St Francis Catholic College launched the inaugural Year 9 Italian Passion Project, an initiative that invited students to explore an aspect of Italy that they found personally meaningful.
The result was far more than a research assignment. It was an opportunity for students to follow their curiosity, develop independence, and discover the satisfaction of directing their own learning.
For many students, the project represented the culmination of nearly three years of Italian study.
Rather than being assigned a topic, students were encouraged to identify an area of personal interest and investigate it through the lens of Italian language, culture, history, society, or identity.
The diversity of topics reflected the diversity of our learners. Some students explored historical periods, architecture, mythology, and famous artworks. Others investigated contemporary Italy through football culture, automotive design, artificial intelligence, social media trends, and popular culture.
Several students connected their learning to food traditions, family heritage, travel experiences, or imagined journeys through Italy.

The project began with a proposal in which students identified a topic they were genuinely curious about and outlined what they hoped to discover.
From there, they embarked on a process of research, analysis, and guided inquiry, drawing on a range of sources, authentic Italian materials, and classroom learning.
What was particularly impressive was not only what students learned, but how they chose to share their learning.
The final showcase featured paintings and drawings, carefully constructed models, brochures and pamphlets, multimedia presentations, animations, and digital storytelling projects. Each student was able to communicate their understanding in a way that reflected both their learning and their individual strengths.

Perhaps the most rewarding outcome was the sense of ownership students developed over their work. Many spoke of enjoying the freedom to pursue a topic they cared about and feeling more motivated because the learning felt personal and meaningful. Their enthusiasm was evident in both the quality of their research and the creativity of their final presentations.
Congratulations to our Year 9 Italian students on the successful completion of the inaugural Italian Passion Project.
The imagination, effort, and curiosity displayed throughout the project were outstanding. This first year has laid a strong foundation for what promises to become a valued and inspiring part of the Italian program for years to come.
Languages Domain Leader - Melton Campus

Art Club students have been experimenting with watercolour painting techniques. They have been studying a range of fruit and vegetable references to create delicate yet vibrant watercolour pieces.
In the next session, students will enhance their artwork by using fine liners to add intricate details, bringing their pieces to life.

We are delighted to announce the expansion of the High Ability Program at St Francis Catholic College, with 12 Year 7 students and three Year 8 students joining the Cobblebank Campus program, and 11 Year 7 students joining the Melton Campus program.
The High Ability Program was introduced to provide extension and enrichment opportunities for students who demonstrate strong academic potential, curiosity, creativity, and a passion for learning.
The addition of these students reflects the growing success of the program and the exceptional talent emerging across our College community.
Throughout the year, students in the program participate in a range of academic competitions, enrichment activities and targeted workshops designed to challenge their thinking and develop their problem-solving, collaboration and leadership skills.
Students have participated in the Da Vinci Decathlon, a computational and algorithmic thinking competition, and will begin working toward Tournament of Minds, International Competitions and Assessments for Schools, and other academic initiatives that encourage innovation and higher-order thinking.
After-school workshops provide students with opportunities to work alongside like-minded peers, engage in complex challenges and explore learning beyond the classroom curriculum. These sessions foster resilience, creativity and a growth mindset while helping students develop confidence in their abilities.
The recent expansion of the program is a testament to the dedication and enthusiasm shown by our students and staff. We are excited to welcome our new participants and look forward to supporting their academic and personal growth as they continue to flourish within this exciting initiative.
Last Friday at Cobblebank Campus all students came together for a series of team-building activities designed to help them get to know one another.
The afternoon was highly enjoyable and engaging, with a strong sense of friendly competition. Activities challenged students to use communication, teamwork, code-breaking, lateral thinking, and measurement skills.
Congratulations to all students who have been selected for the program. We look forward to celebrating their achievements and watching them embrace the many opportunities that lie ahead.
