As we begin Term 2 still in the Season of Easter and Light we find ourselves amidst significant changes in the leadership of the Catholic Church with the passing of His Holy Father, Pope Francis.
Last Saturday, the world was able to watch as Pope Francis was farewelled and laid to rest in St Mary Major Basilica in Rome. It was a true reflection of how he lived with humility and simplicity. Commencing with the funeral, the Church entered The Novemdiales, a nine-day period during which nine masses are held for his soul.
As a Franciscan school, we give thanks for a progressive Pope who lived humbly, was a beacon of hope for the poor and marginalised, and embodied love and care for all creation. May his humble life, inspired by the Gospel and our school's patron saint, St Francis of Assisi, continue to guide us in our mission.
During his 12 years as Pope, Francis wrote so much that was easy to read and access.
He wrote about the joy of the Gospel, and tackled world social justice issues such as poverty, climate change and peace.
From his first day as Pope, he asked for the Church to pray for him and called for dialogue with the people. He stayed steadfast to bring renewal to many Catholics while at the same time having a deep respect for all religions.
We ask that you keep in your prayers the leaders of the Church during this time and that they have the courage, like Pope Francis did, to follow their own conscience as they appoint the 267th Pope and Bishop of Rome.
Last Wednesday, St Francis College staff participated in our Annual Faith Formation Day in collaboration with Franciscan Schools Australia.
We reflected on the lives of Pope Francis and St Francis of Assisi, deepening our understanding of their humble, Gospel-inspired lives and our Franciscan identity.
Staff engaged with The Canticle of Creatures and Laudato Si` through interactive workshops, supporting our motto of Faith in Action.
The day concluded with a liturgy and contemplative prayer led by Friar Stephen Bliss. As a parting gift, staff received seeds symbolising St Francis' love of nature, reminding us to connect with creation and each other in fraternity and to “care for our common home”.

Welcome back to Term 2. I hope that all of our families enjoyed the extra week of holidays and that students have returned fresh and ready to learn.
A huge congratulations to our staff and students for their tremendous fundraising efforts for Caritas’ Project Compassion campaign in Term 1.
To date, we have raised well over $6000. Caritas is one of the largest humanitarian organisations in the world. Their approach to aid is to gain local involvement to ensure sustainable change in the lives of the most vulnerable.
It is with great excitement that we announce that our new oval at Cobblebank Campus is officially open.
Thank you to Ben Ling and the team at Sporteng who designed and facilitated construction. This extra space is a welcome addition for both our students at break times and for our Health and Physical Education domain.
The new oval includes a cricket pitch, which will allow the College to establish a Cricket Academy at Cobblebank
Upcoming construction at Cobblebank Campus will include cricket practice nets and our Stage 3 building, which includes learning spaces for senior students.
With Parent Student Teacher Interviews beginning this week, I encourage you to take the time to meet with our teachers to discuss your child’s progress.
I look forward to a busy but exciting Term 2.

Last Thursday, teachers and learning support officers attended our professional learning day, the theme for which was Making Numbers Count.
The day was facilitated by Kirstin Bourne, an education consultant with experience in data, literacy and numeracy.
The purpose was to leverage the pre-existing focus on disciplinary literacy (2022, 2023 with Kirstin Bourne) and recent numeracy professional learning from Melbourne University (2024).
Numeracy is one of the three priorities in our 2024-2027 School Improvement Plan.
The aim was to refresh prior learning, to continue to support teachers to build upon their disciplinary numeracy skills and to demonstrate the clear links between literacy and numeracy.
Kirstin began by unpacking our current staff survey data around perceived confidence in teaching numeracy and literacy.
We learned about current data trends from the Grattan Institute and the alignment with our staff. Links were made to cognitive load and the science of learning.
The final session focused on staff collaboration, working within their Domains (Year 7-9 or Year 10-12) to embed explicit teaching of numeracy with an awareness of the literacy required to understand numeracy tasks.
This was a powerful day for learning and teaching, linking the Melbourne Archdiocese Catholic Schools Vision for Instruction and the College’s Strategic Improvement Plan.

Last Friday 25 April, the Australian War Memorial in Canberra celebrated the 110th anniversary of the Gallipoli landings, as well as commemorating all Australians who have served in times of peace and war.
Thousands of Australians, and I am sure a number of our staff and students, gathered at dawn around the country and at Gallipoli to commemorate ANZAC Day.
Observed on 25 April each year, this is a national day of remembrance in Australia and New Zealand, commemorating the service and sacrifice of all Australians and New Zealanders in wars, conflicts, and peacekeeping operations.
It specifically marks the anniversary of the first major military action by Australian and New Zealand forces during World War I and the landing at Gallipoli.
ANZAC Day builds national identity - it plays a significant role in shaping Australian and New Zealand national identities, highlighting the shared history and values associated with ANZACS - values of camaraderie, mateship and courage in the face of horrific casualties as a result of war.
ANZAC DAY builds unity - it brings communities together to reflect on the impact of war and conflict on society. In remembering this impact, we pray that we do not repeat the mistakes of the past and that we seek peace at any cost.
ANZAC Day acknowledges continued service – that of Australians and New Zealanders in peacekeeping operations and other conflicts around the world.
This week, students and staff at both campuses took time to acknowledge this important event in Australian history.
It is important that our students learn about and remember the past - not only to give thanks for the sacrifice of others but also to ensure that we seek to avoid the tragic loss of human life that war inflicts.

Christians Buses has advised that due to significant traffic congestion between Strathtulloh and Melton, a revised service route will be introduced for the Bacchus Marsh and Melton via Eynesbury and Strathtulloh service.
This means all pick-up times for stops on the morning route have been amended.
The amended timetable will be in effect from next Monday 5 May 2025.
Please note these changes do not relate to the Eynesbury Buz Biz service.
The current delays the service is experiencing are impacting students' arrival times at school and have also had a significant impact on students accessing connecting services at the Melton Secondary College interchange.
The revised morning timetable is below:
7:00 AM – Depart Depot via Fisken Street, Geelong Road, and Parwan Road
7:25 AM – Bendigo Drive & Rushworth Avenue, at the 10th Green
7:27 AM – No. 62 Rushworth Avenue (Park Reserve)
7:30 AM – 671 Eynesbury Road
7:31 AM – 611 Eynesbury Road (Park Reserve)
