Remembering Sr Helen Reed
We were saddened this past week to hear of the passing of our founding principal Sr Helen Reed.
Sr Helen holds a special place in our school's history. During her years as principal of CRC Melton (1980-1984), she led with wisdom, compassion and a deep commitment to the wellbeing of students and staff.
Before joining CRC, Sr Helen had worked at Aquinas College in Ringwood and extensively across Victorian country parish schools.
She was the principal of MacKillop College in Werribee when the Provincial of the Sisters of the Order of St Joseph invited her to apply for the principalship at the new Catholic Regional College campus in Melton. In the great Josephite tradition of ‘never seeing a need without doing something about it’, Sr Helen agreed.
Her vision and philosophy were best summed up in a prospectus she produced, which revealed much about the school's character in its early years.
“In this Catholic school, we would aim through our education and our teaching of the Catholic faith to create a Christian Educational Community… Where human knowledge, enlightened and enlivened by faith, is shared by teachers, students and parents in a spirit of freedom and love.”
The story of CRC Melton's early years reflects the determination and “can-do” attitude of Sr Helen and her staff; it was a small school with limited enrolment and funding that had to make the best of its resources.
Staff and student recollections from this time reflect a great spirit of community and pride in building something up from nothing.
Sr Helen’s strong leadership, caring nature and unwavering dedication helped shape the culture and foundations of the College that continue to influence our community today.
After leaving our College, Sr Helen spent 12 months studying overseas before being appointed principal at Mount St Joseph Girls’ College in Altona, where she remained until her retirement in 2002.
We offer our heartfelt condolences to Sr Helen's family, the Sisters of Saint Joseph, and all who knew and loved her.
For the many past and present staff and students whose lives Sr Helen touched, we encourage you to take a moment to remember and celebrate her remarkable life, dedicated service, and enduring legacy.
In her final message to the CRC Melton community, Sr Helen said:
“As I farewell you all, I pray that you may embrace the challenge of the future in a spirit of co-responsibility, mindful of our motto, In all things let God be glorified.”
