On 15 August, we celebrated the Assumption of Mary, the moment when our Blessed Mother was taken body and soul into heavenly glory. Mary’s Assumption is not only a sign of her unique role in salvation history, but also a promise of what awaits all who live in faithful obedience to God.
While this feast day is a relatively new one, having been officially added to the Church’s calendar in 1950, the mystery behind Mary’s assumption has its roots in the earliest centuries of Christian teaching.
Although there is no direct account of her assumption in the Bible, the belief in her assumption is a widely held tradition and has been frequently mentioned in the writings of saints throughout the centuries.
Mary’s life was one of humble service and deep trust. Her obedience to God opened the way for the coming of Christ into the world.
Mary was the first and most perfect disciple: she showed an unwavering faith in God despite facing many challenges. She never doubted and ‘pondered things in her heart’, which demonstrated contemplative faith.
Her Assumption reminds us that every choice we make for God, however small, has eternal value.
As we honour Mary, may her faith inspire our own. Let us strive to follow her example of openness to God’s will, and hold fast to the hope that we, too, are called to share in the glory of heaven.
May we echo Mary’s song, ‘my soul magnifies the Lord’, and let our lives reflect God's grace.

Each year, families are given the opportunity to shape the future of our college by completing the School Improvement Survey.
The insights gathered are used by Melbourne Archdiocese Catholic Schools (MACS) and the College to reflect on how well we are meeting the needs of students and parents.
Your voice makes a difference. The more families who take part, the clearer the picture we gain. Taking part is optional, and all feedback is confidential - no individual can be identified.
To make the survey accessible, it is offered in a wide range of languages, including English, Arabic, Assyrian, Chaldean, Dinka, Falam, Hakha Chin, Simplified and Traditional Chinese, Karen, Tagalog, Vietnamese, and Zomi.
Families from both campuses will be randomly selected to participate in the survey. If you have been chosen, you will receive an email with a unique PIN and step-by-step instructions to access the survey in early September.
If you would like the opportunity to participate, please email our Director of Community Relations, Amy Rowley, at arowley@sfcc.vic.edu.au.
The survey can only be completed once per family and will close on Friday 19 September.
Over the next three weeks, students and staff will also share their views.
If you have questions, please contact MACS at macssis@macs.vic.edu.au or ORIMA Research on 1800 654 585 or at macssis@orima.com.
At our Professional Learning Day held last Friday, teaching staff engaged in several sessions to further their professional growth and promote collaboration.
The day began with a session called Thinking Traps led by David Berlinski, a clinical psychologist from Toolbox Education.
This presentation explored how patterns of thinking can influence our mood, stress levels, and relationships - both at work and in everyday life.
Staff were guided through practical strategies to manage stress, worry, and overthinking.
The session highlighted how replaying difficult interactions can impact confidence and wellbeing and offered tools to shift from “stuck thinking” to more flexible, constructive responses.
Importantly, the strategies shared were not only useful for staff wellbeing, but also provided approaches and practical tools to support students in navigating anxious or negative thought patterns such as:
Following the presentation, staff collaborated in their Domain teams, focusing on curriculum planning, assessment development, literacy and numeracy strategies, and preparation for VCE students.
This work supports the ongoing implementation of Victorian Curriculum 2.0 and ensures consistency across both campuses. You can find out more here.
This was a valuable day of learning and collaboration, helping staff to support student wellbeing and academic growth.

Last Friday, our teachers took part in a Professional Learning Day with a strong focus on learning and teaching.
These days are an important investment in ensuring every student at our school continues to receive the highest quality education.
The time together gave staff the chance to collaborate across campuses, share ideas, and develop new strategies to strengthen learning in every classroom.
Most importantly, the work completed will directly support student progress and wellbeing by ensuring teaching is engaging, responsive, and targeted to student needs.
Some of the key areas our teachers focused on included:
We are proud of the commitment our staff show to continually growing their practice.
Days like this mean that every student benefits from teaching that is well-planned, evidence-based, and tailored to their needs.

After a marathon 12 hours of planning, writing, editing and illustrating, our biggest ever Write a Book in Day (WABIAD) event came to an end at 8pm last Tuesday.
Students did a fantastic job and we are delighted to share their work with you below.
Their books will be made available in a digital library and distributed to children undergoing medical treatment in hospitals across Australia.
Write a Book in a Day promotes literacy, collaboration and creativity and is run by The Kids’ Cancer Project
Each team has also been given the added challenge of meeting a fundraising target of $240 through sponsorship to support childhood cancer research.
You can support them by making a donation using the links below. Fundraising will remain open until 30 September.
Here's what Year 12 Melton students Tra My and Alanis had to say about WABIAD.
Last Tuesday, students from both campuses participated in WABIAD, an experience where we were given 12 hours to draft, illustrate and produce a novel to raise funds for kids’ cancer research.
WABIAD has definitely been a highlight in our senior year, working together for a great cause! We laughed, we cried, we contemplated a Gen Z magpie diva's ability to hack into a computer mainframe, in our story Riches and Treasures and Gold and to worked together to support a great initiative.
We collected rave reviews as we performed a skit of our book to each of the other teams, some saying "I want to see it as a stage show" and "100 out of ten - but unrealistic".
Having participated in WABIAD for the last four years, each time is a unique experience. It's an amazing chance to not only support a great cause but also collaborate with friends and celebrate our peers as talented writers and illustrators.
It allows us to unleash creativity beyond the work we would do in a classroom setting - and the abundance of lollies and pizza that the amazing staff provide throughout the day is a bonus.
Overall, participating in WABAID has given us something to look forward to each year as we traverse through the dreaded test-heavy Term 3. We encourage all students to band their friends together and participate next year!

This year’s Hildegard Literary Prize invited students to respond to the theme Lighting Up the World, inspired by St Francis’ reminder that “All the light in the world cannot extinguish a single candle”.
The competition once again revealed the incredible imagination and insight of our students, who explored how light — in all its forms — can endure, inspire, and transform.
Congratulations to our prize winners:
Cobblebank Junior Prize
Achraj Virk, Year 9 - Before the World Woke Up
A lyrical narrative about family, forgiveness, and the first light of new beginnings after conflict.

This year’s Book Week theme, Book an Adventure, inspired our students to dive into the magic of reading.
The Alexandria Resource Centre was buzzing with excitement as students celebrated stories in fun and interactive ways.
Throughout the week, students created magnetic bookmarks, showcasing their creativity while making something practical to keep their place in their next great read.
We also hosted a lively Book Week Kahoot quiz, where students tested their literary knowledge and enjoyed some friendly competition.
One of the highlights of the week was the Write a Book in a Day challenge. We are thrilled to share that more than 70 students participated, working collaboratively to plan, write, and illustrate original stories – all in just one day! Click here to read more about this fantastic event.
These incredible efforts not only showcased their imagination but also supported a great cause.
We also ran two exciting competitions.
Congratulations to Year 11 Melton student Ciara who won the poetry competition with her creative pirate-themed poem.
Well done also to Year 9 Melton student Krisha whose stunning digital bookmark design took out the top spot in the bookmark competition.
Year 7 Cobblebank student Mamie’s poem also earned her a prize. You can read it here.

Book Week 2025 reminded us that every book is an adventure waiting to be explored.
Thank you to everyone who joined in the celebrations and made the week such a success!

Last week’s Winter Sleep Out was a great success with staff and students from both campuses coming together to raise awareness about the significant increase in homelessness in the Melton area.
The evening was both eye-opening and reflective, giving all participants the chance to learn more about the challenges faced by many in our local community.
We extend our heartfelt thanks to our dedicated staff who not only supervised but also slept out in Sheehan Stadium with the students, modelling the compassion and commitment we hope to inspire.
We are also deeply grateful to our guest speakers: the St Vincent de Paul Youth and Education Officers Rob Tremlett, Tayla Clark and Sarah Miller, St Vincent de Paul Soup Van Coordinator Rebecca Ruffin and the State Member for Melton Mr Steve McGhie MP.
Their insights and expertise gave students a greater understanding of homelessness and the ways in which communities can make a difference.
A heartfelt thank you must also go to our food staff and food assistants from both campuses for baking a delicious selection of healthy and tasty muffins, and to our College canteen for making pots of warm soup and fresh bread rolls for all participants.
The event was a powerful reminder that when a community stands together, real change can happen highlighting the compassion, generosity, and spirit of our community.
“Taking part in my first winter sleepout was a humbling and eye-opening experience. Although it was only one night, it gave me a glimpse of the daily challenges that many people who live without a home endure. It was a confronting experience, and I realised how much we take comfort, warmth and security for granted.” Georgina, Year 10
"Spending one night out in the cold stadium was tough. I was freezing, uncomfortable, and couldn’t sleep. It made me think about how hard it must be for people who go through this every single night.
It really opened my eyes to how much we take for granted—like having a warm bed or even just feeling safe. Homelessness isn’t just about not having a home, it’s about real people facing really hard situations." Mirella, Year 7
We would also like to extend our thanks to our College community for contributing to our annual Winter Appeal.
The generous donations of clothing, food and essential items demonstrate how powerful it is when people unite for a cause.
Together, we collected more than 4000 items to support those most in need this winter. These will be donated to many organisations in our local community.
Thank you to the Faith and Mission Action Team for your assistance each week and to everyone who supported the Winter Appeal and took part in the Winter Sleep Out.
Together, we have made a meaningful difference.
More than 30 students and six staff took part in the College’s annual three-day Senior Ski Trip to Mt Buller recently.
The trip was a fantastic experience that received overwhelmingly positive feedback from both students, parents and staff.
Throughout the three days, students not only improved their skiing skills but also stepped out of their comfort zones, embracing new challenges on the slopes and pushing their personal boundaries.
The shared experience also helped strengthen existing friendships and create new ones, as students supported and encouraged one another throughout the trip.
It was a memorable few days filled with laughter, personal growth, lasting connections and memories.
